Sustainability

Our Sustainability Pledge

As Environmental, Sustainability, Governance (ESG) consultants for the hospitality and real estate sectors, mission : net zero is committed to leading by example and showing transparency with regards to our own carbon footprint commitment.

Our Journey

To ensure transparency we partnered with the team at Planet Mark, a prestigious sustainability certification that helps firms verify and measure carbon and social data to reduce emissions and achieve the UN SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).

Together with Planet Mark we conducted a robust data collection exercise and reported our Scope 1, Scope 2, and core Scope 3 emissions to provide a holistic view of our carbon footprint. Planet Mark independently verified our data to industry standards and provided a detailed third-party verified report with granular data and clear emission reduction guidance. They have assisted us in setting credible benchmarks and annual improvement targets, providing a structured approach to our sustainability goals and taking meaningful steps towards net zero.

Working with Planet Mark we’ll stay ahead of the regulatory curve and the changing carbon emissions reporting requirements to avoid the pitfalls of non-compliance.

You can read about the process and our Planet Mark certification that provides anti-greenwashing assurance here.

Our United Nations-backed Race to Zero Pledge

The Planet Mark Net Zero Programme integrates our core carbon footprint principles of robust data collection, annual verification, certification, strategy setting, employee engagement, and expert communication.

By participating in Planet Mark’s Net Zero Programme and committing to taking rigorous and immediate action to halve emissions by 2030 and achieve net zero as soon as possible before 2050 we are contributing to the UN-backed global Race to Zero campaign.

This provides a credible, internationally acknowledged, and future resilient platform that sees mission : net zero join a recognised effort in addressing climate change through net-zero commitments.

Details on the UN’s Race to Zero programme that elevates ambition and mobilises credible climate action can be found here.

Our Glasgow Declaration

In October 2023, mission : net zero signed the Glasgow Declaration, joining hundreds of stakeholders from the tourism industry, all committed to implementing climate action plans needed to halve sector emissions by 2030.

We want acting responsibly and sustainably to become second nature to our clients. It’s our mission to help the hospitality and other real estate sectors demonstrate authentic engagement with their ESG commitments.

By working with our expert team, clients are supercharging their business operations to decarbonise quickly, credibly, and consistently to meet their net zero commitments.

Our Tourism Declares Commitment

Tourism Declares exists to enable everyone in tourism to implement the Climate Action Plans needed to halve sector emissions by 2030.

In May 2024, we submitted the following declaration:

We declare our shared commitment to unite all stakeholders in transforming tourism to deliver effective climate action.

We support the global commitment to halve emissions by 2030 and reach Net Zero as soon as possible before 2050.

We will consistently align our actions with the latest scientific recommendations, so as to ensure our approach remains consistent with a rise of no more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels by 2100.

We are developing a ‘Climate Action Plan’ which will set out our intentions to reduce carbon emissions by 2030. As part of our own strategic goals, we have already implemented actions to scale-up climate change throughout our organisation and developed new assessment methods that work to reduce our carbon emissions.

Like all signatories, we have committed to the following five actions:

1. Develop a ‘Climate Emergency Plan’ within the next 12 months, which sets out our intentions to reduce carbon emissions over the next decade.

2. Share an initial public declaration of our ‘Climate Emergency Plan’, and update on progress each year.

3. Accept current IPCC advice stating the need to cut global carbon emissions to 55% below 2017 levels by 2030 in order to keep the planet within 1.5 degrees of warming. We’ll ensure our ‘Climate Emergency Plan’ represents actions designed to achieve this as a minimum, through delivering transparent, measurable and increasing reductions in the total carbon emissions per customer arising from our operations and the travel services sold by us.

4. Encourage our suppliers and partners to make the same declaration; sharing best practice amongst peers; and actively participate in the Tourism Declares community.

5. Advocate for change. We recognise the need for system change across the industry to accelerate a just transition towards carbon-free tourism.
