mission : net zero advances sustainability goals with Planet Mark

September 6, 2024

We are pleased to announce mission : net zero has received sustainability certification with Planet Mark.

Since their launch in 2013, Planet Mark has been on a mission to help businesses of all sizes and drive positive change for society, business, and nature by reducing carbon emissions and to reach Net Zero. Net Zero being the balance between emitted and removed greenhouse gas emissions, crucial for stabilising the climate and mitigating severe climate change impacts. This balance is essential to prevent global warming beyond 1.5°C from pre- industrial levels, making Net Zero the cornerstone of long-term sustainability strategies.

Operating at the centre of climate tech, advisory and legislation, Planet Mark’s unified model helps businesses achieve tangible results that stand for meaningful climate action.

As sustainability experts for the hospitality industry and wider real estate sector, it was important to us that mission : net zero demonstrated its own sustainability commitment so in 2023 we embarked on our Year 1 Planet Mark journey.

Since teaming up with Planet Mark, we have reduced our measured carbon per employee by 34.3% from the previous year, as well as aligning with an additional United Nations, Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) which are considered a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.

This year, mission : net zero is prioritising:

  • Developing a meaningful strategy and action plan fundamental to achieving our Net Zero targets with the confidence to communicate our plans without risk of greenwashing.
  • Supporting critical decision making and ensuring our Net Zero ambitions are embedded into day-to-day business operations.
  • Getting ahead of legislation, voluntary frameworks, and procurement requirements with a documented Net Zero transition strategy and action plan.
  • In addition to measuring our Scopes 1 & 2 emissions, as Scope 3 emissions include all other indirect sources of GHG emissions within the company’s value chain, we will complete a Scope 3 Footprint Calculation. This requires collaborative efforts with suppliers and customers to collectively diminish associated carbon emissions.
  • Measuring our social value will enable us to show a more holistic and broader measure of our contributions to society and the environment while strengthening our environmental, social and governance (ESG) credentials.
  • Looking ahead, we will continue to measure our carbon footprint and have set a carbon reduction target of 5% by the end of March 2025.
  • As part of our commitment to sustainability best practice, we have also joined the United Nations, Race to Zero campaign which is a global campaign rallying businesses to take rigorous and immediate action to halve global emissions by 2030 and deliver a healthier, fairer zero carbon world.

Simon Catterick, Chief Executive of mission : net zero, said: “As a business, it is critical that we measure our own impact on the environment – especially if our day job centers around sustainability best practice and advice.

Transitioning to Net Zero is a challenging process for any organisation. It requires business strategy and decision making to be aligned fully with Net Zero ambition, and for processes and polices to be put in place to support the transformation and achieve Net Zero. By designing a comprehensive Net Zero Action Plan we are setting yourself up for success with a timetable of logical carbon reductions, aligned with climate science and integrated into our overall business strategy.”
