mission : net zero commits to Planet Mark eco-certification

We’re committing to ‘walk the walk’ and ‘practice what we preach’ in relation to eco-certification.

Working with Planet Mark, a prestigious sustainability certification, we are committed to measuring and reducing our carbon footprint.  Their Business Certification will recognise our commitment to continuous improvement; measuring and reducing our business’ carbon emissions, energy and water consumption, travel and waste.

Planet Mark

On average, Planet Mark certified businesses make a 24% cut in absolute carbon emissions per year, 17% carbon saving per employee per year through reductions in energy, waste, water, travel and procurement.

Planet Mark will make measuring our carbon footprint simple and efficient using readily available company information. We will then receive high-level improvement recommendations and management information to help drive progress.

Recognising our team members are the key to achieving our sustainability goals we will use Planet Mark’s webinar workshops, toolkits and events to build knowledge and skills within our team to further embed sustainability into our culture. We’re committed to making a positive impact on our planet and society. to drive innovation and continual progress.

We are excited to start reducing our carbon emissions to help create a planet that is fit for us and future generations. To give you an idea of the type of targets we’ll be looking to action over the next 12 months:

Carbon footprint measurement and independent verification of:

  • Scope 1 emissions are direct emissions from operations due to owned or controlled site and vehicle fuel consumption.
  • Scope 2 emissions are indirect emissions from the generation of purchased electricity and steam.
  • Scope 3 includes all other indirect sources of emissions that are within a company’s value chain. Scope 3 emissions often represent the greatest proportion of a company’s carbon footprint, and sometimes up to 90% of total emissions.

Achieving net zero carbon emissions means:

  • measuring our Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions;
  • reducing Scopes 1 and 2 emissions to zero, and Scope 3 by a minimum of 50%;
  • balancing any residual Scope 3 emissions using accredited carbon removal schemes.

We’ll also be making a 5% donation to the Eden Project – an education charity delivering transformational projects. And an acre of rainforest protected with Cool Earth – UK-based international NGO that protects endangered rainforest in order to combat global warming, protect ecosystems and to provide employment for local people

As you can imagine, there’s a lot of company and staff data to compile and review but with the support of the entire business – we’re looking forward to making a positive change, and a brighter future for our planet!

Simon Catterick, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Mission : Net Zero commented:

“As sustainability consultants to the hospitality sector, it’s only right that our business operations are held to account. It’s going to be a significant undertaking but one we’re ready for. Gaining Planet Mark Business Certification will be a recognisable sign of the sustainability progress of our company. And we will be able to communicate our environmental and social contributions with credibility, authenticity and transparency.”
